I found this website super helpful and informative, so I'm doing this is for the expats & English speakers. My experience with the exam was quite straightforward and fair. I don't recall the name of the examiner, but he was of average height and slim build, which made the road test portion of the exam manageable and I was able to focus on proper execution.

The technical skills test comprised of slow riding, followed immediately with the straight slalom. We were instructed to move directly to the emergency braking component of the exam. This is done via a straight run-off whereby a red lamp indicates when to start and if flashes again when you are to brake. The examiner is standing alongside the road where he is able to evaluate your technique. For those wondering, I was not tested on the figure-8, hill start, or off-set slalom, so it seems this is at the discretion of the examiner. Once these manoeuvres were executed and successfully passed, we moved onto the road exam component.

Nothing tricky here, so just exercise proper road riding and follow traffic rules. We went direction Adliswil, with a quick jaunt through 30 km/h neighbourhoods, then back onto the main road and up/down Buchenegg. From there we went direction Stallikon to Birmensdorferstrasse, followed by a right onto Schweighofstrasse back to the StVA. On the road component, be mindful of your speed (I kept it within +/- 3 km/h), signalling, lane position, and cyclists.

To each his own, but in the weeks leading up to the exam, I put in substantial time on weekends and an hour during weekdays to practice the slow manoeuvres. I also used the open hours the StVA has to practice & to get used to the location/layout (no surprises). Show control of your motorcycle at slow speeds (proper clutch, gas, front/read braking technique) and your body positions and gaze also factor. For example, slow and control means your motorcycle isn't using the whole 1m width of the slow drive. Keep it on a straight and steady line.

A few items to note that I only discovered the morning of the exam and while it may seem obvious to others: i) the letter from the StVA indicates which parking spot number you should pull into, ii) do a pre-walk through with your motorcycle (signals, head, & brake lamps, tire tread), and iii) be prepared to hand over your motorcycle registration, learners permit, and current driving licence.

Schwierige Stellen:

» Leimbachstrasse 64

Caution when making a right turn off Leimbachstrasse onto Soodstrasse, this is basically a u-turn so be prepared.
